The 2017 Blessing of the Lambs service took place on Sunday 2 April. Introduced two years ago by Rector Simon Cowling, this celebration has now become a much-loved feature of Spring at Bolton Priory.
As in previous years, a ewe and her four twenty-four hour old lambs were brought to us by the local Carr farming family. Before the service, Simon invited the children in the congregation to name the lambs, which they did – Blossom, Blanche, Linda and Priscilla. Our Curate, Revd Jonathan Cain, then conducted the service, during which mother and daughters behaved themselves impeccably.
Although this service has now become something of a Priory tradition, one innovation was that this year the service was filmed by the BBC, and will feature as part of the “Songs of Praise” programme on Sunday April 9 at 17:00. If you miss it then, you can catch it later online here.
As a rural parish, the service gave us an opportunity to pray, and give thanks, for all those ‘good shepherds’ in our area who are involved in sheep farming.
